Oropos
The Municipality of Oropos was established in 2010, with the merger of the Municipalities of Avlonos, Kalamos and Oropia as well as the former communities of Afidna, Kapandriti, Malakassa, Markopoulos, Polydendri and Sykaminos according to the Administrative Reform known as "Kallikratis".
It occupies the entire northeastern Attica and extends from the Euboean Gulf to the foothills of Mount Parnitha and from Lake Marathon to the borders of Attica with Boeotia.
The area has a remarkable history as it was the rich agricultural center of "Graia" (from which the word "Graikos" came) of Tanagra in ancient times, while after its destruction by the Boeotians it passed under the jurisdiction of the Athenians, and was separated from them a few years later and became an independent district.
During the Byzantine years, it experienced particular prosperity as an agricultural power due to its fertile lands, but it suffered a huge blow during the period of Turkish rule when it was almost completely destroyed in order to build supply bases for the Turkish forces there.
Today it is a municipality in which many different professional specialties are active, it has unique natural beauty and a rich cultural heritage.
The Municipality of Oropos is a very important tourist resort and despite the fact that it is mainly characterized as a summer destination, there are many options it offers to its visitors during the other seasons of the year.
